「Do you speak English?」

“Do you speak English?” a voice boomed out from the seat next to me at Komeda’s coffee shop. This would be the start of getting to know Takeuchi Noboru, a specialist in manufacturing and the Toyota Production System. Little did I know that a few years later I would be helping him get the English version of his book “The Toyota Production System Journey” prepared. This would be the start of my learning the various ins and outs of TPS concepts over the years to follow, and reading through various documents. In his book, Takeuchi-san explains TPS in the style of a novel, through the eyes of himself and other practitioners over his working life experience in a simple way that is understandable for beginners to TPS.

Finally, this year Takeuchi-san’s final life goal was completed after a lot of hard work and persistence! And it also gave me a great deal of pleasure to have helped him on this journey and to have had the opportunity to learn from a specialist in a field I had known nothing about. I don’t hesitate to add that there are very likely to have been teachers out there who may have had a better grasp of the concepts I grappled to understand as he grappled to explain them in his second language. Perhaps we both grew a few more grey hairs through the process? But, through this process, I believe he strengthened his English ability, giving him important practice for future situations where he might need to explain it to others through his consultancy work and as he promotes this book. So, I was glad when we recently met that I could be presented with the book he had poured blood, sweat and tears over! It was also a strange feeling to see my name included in the preface of this book as I had never imagined being accredited in any book let alone one about manufacturing! I believe this project encapsulates what Connect School is about, as we seek to enhance our students’ lives and fulfil their dreams – however big or small – through language study.

You too may have a project like this you need support with. Or, perhaps you simply wish to enhance your experience as you travel and connect with English-speaking foreigners, clients or waiters! Why not take one step towards fulfilling your dream in 2023?
