先日レッスンをしていた際に、話題が野球へと移りました。イギリス人である私は、野球について最低限のことしか知りませんが、日本に長く住んでいるため、現在アメリカで話題になっている大谷翔平投手のことは耳にしていました。
レッスンで話していると、生徒さんがこう発言しました。
“We’re expecting Shohei Ohtani.”
日本語から英語に直訳した、何も問題のない文章に見えるかもしれません。日本語では、「期待する」という言葉は、将来の何かに対する興奮や期待感を表すのに使われます。また、「期待する」という言葉は、その人について何を期待しているかということとは関係なく、その人自身に対して使うことができます。
例えば、日本語では次のように言うことができます。
「大谷翔平に期待している」
ここで問題なのは、この文が英語では少し違う意味を含んでしまうということです。「We’re expecting Shohei Ohtani」と言えば、彼がもうすぐ到着したり現れたりすることを予定している、という意味になります。
例えば、このようにも言えます。
“I’m expecting a delivery at 16:00”
“I’m expecting a telephone call from my friend soon.”
ただその生徒さんは大谷翔平選手の到着予定について話していたわけではありません。なのでこの場合、大谷選手についての追加の情報を入れる必要がでてきます。
正しい表現は次のようになります。
“We’re expecting great things from Shohei Ohtani.” (great things = 良い成績・成功)
また、”expect “を動詞と一緒に、toを用いて使うこともできます。
“We’re expecting Shohei Ohtani to…
play very well.”
hit a home run.”
win the MVP award.”
また、「expect」を「will」を用いて”予想”の文章にすることもできます。
“I expect Japan will win the World Baseball Classic.”
次回から expect という単語を使用する際、何かの到着についての話でなければ、上記のような追加の情報を入れて使ってみてください。I’m expecting you to use it correctly next time!

Recently, I was teaching a lesson and the topic of conversation had moved on to baseball. As an Englishman, I know the bare minimum about the sport. However, I have lived in Japan for long enough to have heard about Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese superstar pitcher/hitter/fielder currently making waves in the US.
As we were talking, my student said,
“We’re expecting Shohei Ohtani”.
It might seem like a good sentence, translated directly from Japanese. In Japanese, the word 「期待する」can be used to express excitement or anticipation for something in the future. It can be used about a person, without any reference to exactly what we are expecting about them.
For example, we could say,
「大谷翔平に期待している」
The problem is that this sentence has a slightly different meaning in English. If we say, we’re expecting Shohei Ohtani, it means that we believe he will arrive or appear in the future.
For example, we could say:
“I’m expecting a delivery at 16:00”, or, “I’m expecting a telephone call from my friend soon.”
But my student wasn’t talking about Shohei Ohtani’s future arrival. He was talking about his performance in future baseball games. In this case, we need to include some extra information about this performance in our English sentence.
A better thing to say would be,
“We’re expecting great things from Shohei Ohtani”. (great things = good performance / success)
Or, we can also use “expect” with an action, using to:
“We’re expecting Shohei Ohtani to…
play very well.”
hit a home run.”
win the MVP award.”
Finally, we can use expect with a prediction using will:
“I expect Japan will win the World Baseball Classic.”
So, next time you want to use expect and you’re not talking about an arrival, make sure to add some extra information. I’m expecting you to use it correctly next time!
